Meet the Educators: Christie C.
Northeastern student, Christie Chen, is ready to hit the road, speak boldly about consent, and change lives this summer.
Christie Chen gave an enthusiastic "Yes!" when Speak About It asked if she wanted to join the team. “I believe this is exactly the kind of show that can change someone’s life. I am consistently illuminated by theatre that sparks a conversation about social and political change, and want to create that kind of work myself, she says." In just under a week, Christie will embark on a life changing, cross-country adventure. She and her Speak About It cast mates will bring the show to dozens of colleges, and encourage other young folks to give their own enthusiastic "Yes!" to consent-filled, healthy relationships.
Hot off the heels of an intensive at the American Theatre Center, Christie has had a packed summer of learning and growth through theatre. Clearly this is something she's passionate about, “Theatre is a way for us to examine ourselves as human beings onstage,” she says. Christie has built a diversity of experience on stage and off, and has done theater in Boston, London, Beijing, and will put 10+ new college towns on that list once she completes her tour with Speak About It. This fall, she returns to her senior year at Northeastern University, where she is a Theater Performance student.
Christie is an avid Soulcycler, singer, and former cheerleader and peer mentor, so take it from us: she’s a total pro at making people feel supported, encouraged, and welcomed in any space. Learn a little more about Christie below, and be sure to follow her on Facebook and Instagram, as she hits the road with her cast this summer.
Speak About It: Why is educating students about consent important to you?
Christie: The necessity of consent has always been so clear to me, but I realize that not everyone has had the privilege of growing up in a diverse and safe community as I did. Especially given our current political climate, I feel that I have no other choice but to speak up and help educate others where appropriate.
SAI: Why do you think theater is a great way to share our message with students?
C: It’s less preachy than an assembly or seminar, and can have a profound effect on audiences, sometimes without them even realizing it! One of most fascinating moments to me is when you go see a show and think, “Oh, wait… Wow, I actually kind of identify with the antagonist… Why is that? What does that say about me?”
SAI: What is something you’re looking forward to on tour?
C: My hope is that at least one person who sees our show has a positive change in mindset.
SAI: If you could read one book for the rest of your life, what would it be?
C: The entire Harry Potter Series.
SAI: What is something you’re super proud of? Don’t be humble.
C: My ability to make someone feel like they are a part of a group. I grew up in three countries and attended 11 schools, so I know how it feels to be excluded and no one should ever feel that way!
